Abortion is surgery and all surgery carries risks. Risks can be minimized by common-sense health and safety regulations of the sort that Virginia has in place. Step away from the movement rhetoric that is whirling around this issue and you will see the wisdom of protecting women from unregulated medical facilities. Women deserve no less.
Previously I was a practicing tort attorney who represented women injured (or the estates of women killed) in the course of legal abortion malpractice. I can assure you, from my own experience, that safe and legal are not synonyms. Regulations, properly enforced, can safeguard women's health.
