Dry needling is ACUPUCTURE. Yes, PTs are incredibly valuable health care practitioners AND they did not go to school and sit through years of lectures on point location and safety protocols, participate in hands on labs practicing over and over how to needle the various areas of the body, and then fulfill hundreds of supervised hours needling patients for a wide variety of alimanets (not only pain) as myself and my fellow colleages have done. It is not safe to have a pratitioner that has minimal, if any, experience performing acupuncture...performing acupuncture. If a PT has a patient that would benefit from "dry needling" they should REFER them to an acupuncturist. This is definitely licensed acupuncturist's job to do. This is Patient Centered Care and that is what we should all be aiming for.
