Aside from the fact that the mechanism by which PTs and acupuncturists treat patients with needles is totally different, our expertise in palpation and anatomy provide us with the tools to use needles as an extension of our hands when treating patients.
To the acupuncturists- why limit someone else's practice? I have never desired to try and take away a tool from another medical professional. It is not in the best interest of the people we work with to take away an option from the patient to treat their pain.
It boils down to the fact that there should not be a turf war. I refer patients to acupuncturists when I feel it is appropriate and acupuncturists refer to me. Please do not limit our scope of practice.
