Abortion is not a "routine" procedure. Women have lost thier lives, their fertility and their health after undergoing an abortion. If we really care about women, we would want the strictest possible protections in place, not the least! If the lives of women matter, do not minimize protections, maximize them! There is no excuse for the kinds of violations that have been exposed since inspections of abortion clinics began a few years ago. Those who champion the rights of women should be on the forefront of the effort to ensure that the clinic regulations remain in place. We should not listen to shoddy clinics which do not want to spend the money for minimum safeguards. Nor should we allow individuals who are not physicians to administer abortion-inducing drugs! I think I read that one of the suggestions was to not require a pathology exam to ensure that all baby parts were indeed removed after the abortion. This is courting horrific consequences for women because parts of the baby left inside a mother after an abortion can cause infection and possible sterility. Politics should never trump medical safety!
