I believe the regulations as written are adequate for patient protection and would not be in support the proposed changes. Regulations require the on-premises supervision of externs/preceptees. These individuals have received specialized training from qualified professionals associated with accredited institutions. Practitioners that are generous enough to host externs/preceptees already go through a laborious process to serve as mentors. Burdening them further would deter them from providing this valuable educational experience and be counterproductive to maintaining patient wellbeing in the long run. Please remember that the licensed professionals supervising these individuals took an oath to protect animal welfare.
