Valid Identification is needed in the US for just about everything. A sampling of ID requirements: purchase alcohol, drive a vehicle, cross borders, see a doctor, enter bars, attend GOP and Democratic conventions.

There is no reason a US citizen shouldn't be able to obtain a valid unexpired ID...
