The purpose of the ID is to make sure the person appearing to vote is the same person whose name appears in the poll book - just as the legislature meant when they approved the law.  When an ID expires, that doesn't change the fact that the name and face on the ID still identifies the person holding it.  This is a blatant attempt to restrict voting by the infirm, elderly, and others for whom obtaining a current ID is problematic.
