As an English teacher, my passion and job is to design engaging lessons and to work hard to differentiate instruction for all students (and I have 130 of them) so that each can reach his/her potential. However, I'm constantly pulled away from that priority by countless other bureaucratic tasks that demand time and attention. I simply cannot do everything; I already work 12 hour days and then take grading home. Thus, when I'm forced to devote hours to jumping through hoops and navigating red tape, my lessons and my attention to children invariably suffer. This amendment and the hours of work it entails for me (since I ask my students to read countless texts in my classroom) will pull me away from the craft of teaching and away from individual student needs. Is that really what the families of Virginia want?
