I received my Masters' degree in Clinical Psychology from Radford University in 2007. When I entered the program, it was with the understanding that I would have the option of taking a few extra courses and sitting for the licensure exam and getting my LPC if I wanted to do so. However, immediately after graduation I went on to apply to start counting my supervision hours, I was denied stating that my degree no longer qualified (even though graduates the year before had been approved). Thankfully I was in a job where I did not need to be licensed, however the inability to move towards an LPC limited my opportunities for promotion. I was only left with one option, which was to return to graduate school and work towards my doctorate. My ultimate career goal had always been to earn my doctorate, and thankfully I was accepted to a program with full tuition assistance, however if this had not been the case, my career options would have been severely limited by this arbitary enforcement.
