Preserve Pregnant Inmates Human Dignity

Thank you for giving Virginia's citizens the opportunity to comment on how pregnant inmates are being treated through this comment process.

I am glad that Virginia's regulations of the treatment of pregnant inmates and prisoners are under review.  I hope that female inmates and prisoners will no longer be shackled while they are being given medical treatment, and especially when they are in labor.

The treatment of inmates and prisoners needs to be fair and should preserve their human dignity.  Continual review of policies and procedures should be made.  The State Board of Corrections and other committees within state government needs to be held accountable for the humane treatment of pregnant inmates and prisoners.

Sincerely, Helen Gettys Michie (Mrs.)
