Hygienists are mid level providers. The job was created because it was a more basic task, allowing the dentist to free up time to focus on more complex procedures.

Now the mid level providers are angry that their job can also be delegated. 

When assistants can do basic cleanings, this allows the Hygienist to use their "specialized training" to deal with more complex gum disease cases.
