As a girl, I had to compete against boys in taekwondo competitions because there were hardly any girls in the sport at the time.   It made everyone involved uncomfortable. Two things either happened: the boys would either try to beat me up (not allowed) or they wouldn’t even try because it was un-natural for them.  It took away from the sport and was a distraction.
