Given the ongoing mental health crisis in our state and the shortage of adequate resources for Virginians in need of treatment, I am reaching out as both a parent and a concerned citizen regarding the Regulations Governing the Practice of Art Therapy. Establishing licensure for art therapists is a critical step toward expanding access to essential mental health services while ensuring public safety. Granting the Board of Counseling the authority to license art therapists in Virginia would create much-needed clarity in the field, safeguarding individuals from unqualified practitioners who might otherwise claim the title without proper training. This measure would not only protect the integrity of art therapy but also ensure that those seeking care receive safe, professional, and effective treatment.
