Before performing these procedures on patients optometrists must have extensive clinical training, hands-on experience, and have passed a national certification exam. Virginia has almost 2 times more optometrist than ophthalmologists making access to these procedures less burdensome to the working poor. Optometrist are trained to do these procedures and can help healthcare access to Virginia residents.
