Kratom is an important resource against the opioid crisis. So many have used it to stop abusing prescription opioids, heroin, and even fentanyl. In order to recieve help getting off of these drugs, one must find a doctor, deal with insurance or lack thereof, be prescribed one of the substitution therapies (Methadone or suboxone), if methadone they must go to the clinic EVERY AM, if suboxone they must keep up with appointments every month in order to get refills, inform jobs of why they may fail drug tests for these substances, inform family who may see their rx bottle at some point, etc. Kratom being available over the counter gives everyone a chance, whether or not they have insurance or a ride to a clinic/pharmacy, they can still pass a drug test, etc. There are barriers to care that will keep our most vulnerable hooked on fentanyl and dying instead of having to admit their use to docs and family and deal with the lifelong consequences. Kratom gives them a chance to wean down their use and quit completely, or, as with the other substitution therapies, they should be encouraged to continue as long as needed (lifelong even) to prevent relapse. It allows them to maybe feel good enough to go to work while quitting when they would be in the worst pain of their lives for a few weeks from withdrawal without it and maybe lose their job. It allows them some non intoxicating relief when life with nothing is too hard and the alternative is hard drugs. It is helping so many and necessary for those who don't have consistent medical care and can't take 90 days off work to go to rehab without losing their housing and all they own, cant just go stay with parents for awhile. Those who dont see those obstacles are showing their privilege and taking for granted their blessings. The most vulnerable in society need this option. It is a ground up leaf off of a plant whose closest relative is the coffee plant. Please don't take it away.
