I support the recommendations of this petition. My particular concern lies with the ongoing impact to game fish stocks and predatory bird populations within the entire Chesapeake Bay, caused by over-harvesting of Atlantic Menhaden from within Virginia waters of the Bay. These impacts are well documented and have been presented two VMRC in past sessions, yet they have been ignored. The Commonwealth of Virginia does not hold sole ownership of the natural resources available in the Bay. Measures must be enacted to preserve this critical resource for the states boardering the Chesapeake Bay and the nation as a whole. In my opinion, all purse seine netting operations for Atlantic Menhaden should be permanently moved to offshore regions and no longer allowed within the Chesapeake Bay.
