As a teacher of AP Environmental Science and Marine Science I discuss the Chesapeake Bay menhaden fishery as an example of the negative ecological impacts of unsustainable fishing practices. I would love to change this lesson to an excellent example of how a sustainably-managed fishery can be a win-win situation with far-reaching positive effects on the ecosystem and on local economies, and an example of how citizen action based on scientific research can lead to important change. Menhaden is a keystone species that needs to be protected. There needs to be a total moratorium on menhaden fishing in the Chesapeake Bay so that scientific research can be completed and sustainable management plans based on this research can be designed. We do not want a repeat of the cod disaster resulting from unsustainable fishing in the North Atlantic.
