The practice of using purse seine nets that extend to the sea bed is detrimental to the ecosystem and results in excessive bycatch. Menhaden harvesters operating in Virginia waters and beyond should be shut down until they discontinue this practice. They are already robbing the Chesapeake Bay of a vital forage fish and this practice is causing even more harm than just local depletion of menhaden.
