I am writing to oppose the newly proposed model policy that requires parent approval for students to be referred to by the pronouns that they identify with in school. As a mental health practitioner, I am horrified that our kids safety is being threatened in this way. LGBTQ+ youth are at higher risk for suicidal ideation than cis-gender and heterosexual youth. According to a recent survey conducted by the Trevor Project, more than half of transgender and nonbinary youth respondents seriously considered attempting suicide in the past 12 months.[1] Research shows that use of a young person’s chosen name and pronouns decreases symptoms of depression by 71% and decreases suicidality by 65%.[2] Similarly, youth with social support and access to at least one in-person LGBTQ-affirming space reported fewer suicide attempts than those without such space. For some kids, schools may be the one place where they feel safe to be who they are. These proposed policies take away the opportunity for that sense of safety for kids who are at greatest risk for suicide and self-harm. I strongly oppose the newly proposed model polidy.
