I am dismayed and disgusted by the Youngkin Administration's proposed model policies for transgender students. These students deserve compassionate, caring, and affirming support from our public education system. In many cases, tragically, they do not have this support at home, and now our Virginia educators will be forced to turn their backs on them as well.
Contrary to Rep. Bob Good's terrible and inaccurate assertion, the large percentage of transgender youth who attempt suicide is directly attributable to their not feeling accepted and supported--rather than "grooming" as he moronically proclaims. They simply want to fit in with their peers and live as their true selves.
My daughter is a social worker who works with transgender youth every day. Those who have a supportive network of family, friends, teachers, and counselors are thriving--they are happy, confident, and living healthy and rewarding lives. Governor Youngkin and his misguided advisors are proposing to create a system that devalues and stigmatizes these vulnerable young people, putting many of them at risk of great harm.
The most egregious aspect is that the proposed policies are not research-based. In fact, they run counter to the substantial medical and mental health research recommendations that overwhelmingly call for affirmation and support. Youngkin is risking children's lives in order to score political points. Speaking truth to power: that is simply evil.
