As the parent of a rising 8th grader in Virginia's public schools, I write to respectfully oppose the proposed guidance document that would essentially allow parents and outside groups to challenge ANY material that they believe is "sexually explicit."
This policy is not needed as parents are already able to review their child's curriculum and serve on advisory committees in their public schools. Rather, the intent of this policy appears to be to allow almost anyone to challenge materials that have even passing references to sexuality or even discussions of LGBTQ+ families or relationships.
Students should be allowed to access a broad range of materials that discuss and value all members of society and social situations -- and should not be faced with government imposed "book bans" by those who challenge classic literary works merely because they disagree with the author's viewpoint. Oppose this misguided policy and ensure that our students continue to have true academic freedom.
Thank you in advance for considering these comments.
