Strongly Oppose

As a resident of Virginia for over 35 years, a parent of two high school students, and a practicing school counselor I am writing in opposition to this guidance document.  I am very concerned that the implementation of these policies in this matter will not only negatively impact my children’s education but could also be a huge detriment to LGBTQ+ and questioning youth. First of all, many accepted works of literature could potentially have explicit content given the broad descriptions in this bill and working document. I am very concerned that my children and other students will lose access to these works of literature and the rich learning that would result. Both of my children participate in AP and dual enrollment classes and if they are not able to learn from these types of literature in their classes they will not as be prepared for college as other students. Additionally and possibly even more importantly I am very concerned that these policies will lead to a targeting of books written by and about LGBTQ+ individuals. Research has shown that representation is critical for vulnerable populations. Removing representation by removing books or other curricular materials will have a detrimental effect on our vulnerable students. And finally I’m very worried about how this will impact our teaching staff and the pressure but they will be put under which could lead to even more resignations!
