As a prior Henrico County School Board member, I try to follow public school-related issues as several of my grandchildren attend public schools elsewhere in the Commonwealth. Although none are in high school, I have done research on what students are being exposed to at that level. I heard concerns about Toni Morrison's book "Beloved" being used in high school as instructional material in Virginia. I read the book and was horrified at the sexually explicit material that I would not want high school children exposed to. For that reason, I think such material should also not be available in school libraries, even if it is not used for instruction. I have read many other books myself that would address the issues of slavery that may be the reason this book was chosen for inclusion in high school instruction, without the inclusion of sexually explicit material. My thanks to Dr. Dunnavant for advancing this bill. I believe the language in the guidance document is clear and will allow parents to know and review materials before their children are exposed to sexually explicit material.
