I am writing as the mother of two Henrico County public school students, and I oppose this policy. Frankly, I'm disappointed in this proposed politicization of our schools, and I believe this language has been crafted with a deliberate intention to censor literature and texts that represent or even address LGBTQIA experiences.  If this policy is adopted, teachers and administrators would (understandably) be very hesitant to teach anything that they would have to notify parents about. I suspect they'd be forced to entirely avoid books that deal with anything remotely touching on love, sexuality, and especially books that touch on gender identity. These are topics that I trust our educators to teach--and in fact, I hope that by the time my children complete their schooling, I expect them to be asked to read books that deal with love, sexuality, and gender identity. If they aren't, they will be uneducated, and I will be disappointed in the quality of Virginia public education.

As a parent, I've always had plenty of access to the materials that my children engage with at school. I am regularly invited to teacher conferences, my children's curriculum is directly shared with me through Schoology, and I am always encouraged to talk with my children's teachers about their work. This new measure is unnecessary.

This policy is deliberately divisive and it is intended to isolate and hurt LGBTQIA children, as well as children who have loved ones in the LGBTQIA community. That's a LOT of children, and our schools should not enact policies intended to hurt children. Please don't adopt this policy.
