Guidance Document Change: In 2021, the Virginia General Assembly passed House Bill 1904 and Senate Bill 1196, and was signed into law by Governor Northam. The law establishes new requirements to support culturally competent educators in the Commonwealth. The Guidance on Cultural Competency Training for Teachers and Other Licensed School Board Employees in Virginia Public Schools was developed for the Board to fulfill the statutory mandate to provide guidance on the minimum standards for the local training requirement.

Those who think this is CRT are misled-- Yes to this!

Those who think this is Critical Race Theory are unfortunately very misled in what the purpose of cultural competency training is. Please take a second to understand that cultural competency training is to help teachers of different backgrounds understand and educate themselves in how to teach students of different backgrounds properly.

Students' education should be holistically considered and taught which includes their various diverse backgrounds.

Critical Race Theory has never been taught in the public school system. And, there has never been a push for it either. Acknowledging and knowing about racism and the various experiences that come with various racial backgrounds in the United States is not teaching people to hate others. I would recommend people take a deep hard look into themselves as to why they may think that way. Our differences should be celebrated but those who are discriminated against in our society because of those differences should be uplifted. In a country that boasts diversity and equality, isn't our mission to strive for better change and education where we can understand one another better? And, shouldn't our educators know about their students' societal and interpersonal struggles based on their various backgrounds in order to successfully teach them empathetically and academically?

Yes to this policy. Please keep doing things like this.
