Guidance Document Change: In 2021, the Virginia General Assembly passed House Bill 1904 and Senate Bill 1196, and was signed into law by Governor Northam. The law establishes new requirements to support culturally competent educators in the Commonwealth. The Guidance on Cultural Competency Training for Teachers and Other Licensed School Board Employees in Virginia Public Schools was developed for the Board to fulfill the statutory mandate to provide guidance on the minimum standards for the local training requirement.

Yes to Competence Training

As a life-long VA resident and product of VA public schools I fully support this program. Cultural competency is an important facet of being an effective educator. Our teachers must be able to understand where our diverse students are coming from - their unique challenges and the diverse character of our community - in order to effectively reach them and teach the core learning objectives. This proposal has nothing to do with critical race theory, an analytical tool used in the academic and legal profession. I sincerely hope that this proposal stands and that the incoming administration does not interfere with such a worthwhile and innocuous program.
