"Cultural Competency Training" is an example of how bureaucracies expand and metastasize themselves. The governor, legislature, and the courts need to put the public school bureaucracy on a strict diet. The elements and principles CCT proports to imbed in teachers are at once simple-minded, patently obvious, and wrong. It's junk food, zero value. Public school teaching needs to return to educating students in basic English grammar and rhetoric and leave sociology where it belongs--in a sociology class. "Emotional Well Being" training is another example of educational techno-bureaucrats putting lipstick on the same pig. If anything, such curricula should be offered as electives. Since the 2000's, Virginia public schools, community colleges, and universities have paid inordinate attention to diversity, inclusion, equity, etcetera, and yet the racial achievement gap has widened. The approach is a failure. Time to "reimagine" ways to help lagging student demographic groups assimilate. The true purpose of education in a democratic republic like the US should be to help students understand how our system was born (warts and all), why it was born, how it differs from other governmental forms, and the rules for how it allows individuals to improve their lives through merit. Athletic training is a sensible metaphor that can be understood by all.
