Guidance Document Change: In 2021, the Virginia General Assembly passed House Bill 1904 and Senate Bill 1196, and was signed into law by Governor Northam. The law establishes new requirements to support culturally competent educators in the Commonwealth. The Guidance on Cultural Competency Training for Teachers and Other Licensed School Board Employees in Virginia Public Schools was developed for the Board to fulfill the statutory mandate to provide guidance on the minimum standards for the local training requirement.

Can we just bring back cultural literacy?

Remember the 80s / 90s when educators were up in arms that cultural literacy was being lost?  I do.   I believe in the value of a solid foundation foundation in the arts and sciences as a means to help people understand and investigate the world around them as a curious learner.  Let's turn off social media and just start growing real learners and thinkers.   And the awesome thing about the cultural literacy is guess what?  culture continues to evolve, new artists, new music, new writers, new thought leaders...lets continue to learn from them all.  I have always considered my liberal and likely always will.  But I remember in college when I literally felt that I could speak my opinion respectfully and that was fine.  I cant imagine kids these days feel the same and that has to be horrible for dialogue
