If you’re an adult, you might not remember this, but you had to get required, that is, mandatory, immunizations before you were allowed to start school. So you wouldn’t get infected with the terrible diseases that killed or crippled generations of children before you. We are facing exactly that sort of disease now, and we have, thank goodness, and thank science, a highly effective set of immunizations to stop the illness. So, yes, of course, students and teachers should be required to get vaccinations. We are in the midst of a deadly pandemic, and every single unvaccinated person, in addition to being a threat to his or her own family and friends, and to others as well, is an incubator for even more deadly variants: viruses mutate readily to become more contagious. It is not an issue of freedom, it is not an issue of vaccine safety—they are extremely safe—it is an issue of protecting public health, of consideration and responsibility for others, and of good government doing what it should to insure the well-being of as many as possible.
