Action:
Align barber curriculum with scope of practice
[Withdrawn 12/15/2017]
Reason for Withdrawal
The Board’s Barbering Committee met on December 14, 2017, to address concerns expressed by barber schools about performance requirements in the revised curriculum. As a result, this regulatory action needs to be withdrawn so the Board can revise and approve the performance requirements. In addition, potential statutory changes during the upcoming 2018 General Assembly Session may affect the regulatory amendments. A new action will be submitted, if needed, after the legislature adjourns.
General Information
Action Summary |
These changes correct barber school curriculum and performance requirements to conform to the statutory scope of practice for barbering. Amendments propose a barber curriculum consisting of a minimum of 1,100 clock hours (instead of the current 1,500) and 420 total performances (instead of the current 490). Barber school training has included the following services that are not covered by the legal definition of barbering: styling of the hair with a hand dryer, thermal waving, permanent waving with chemicals, wig care, and lightening or toning the hair.
