I think the SEL standards for each grade band look really great! As a parent, obviously I'm going to work on instilling the social-emotional skills I find important in my child, but I think it's invaluable to have the school reinforce these skills in a systematic way. Even after reading comments, I can't imagine why people would be opposed to students learning to work together effectively and manage their own emotions. These skills are so necessary for a happy, successful life that I want for my child
For people who think schools should focus on academics, I have to remind them that SEL skills are necessary for all kinds of academic activities, like working in groups or figuring out how to deal with an academic struggle. These standards are a great way to add support to academic instruction in the school and especially will be helpful when our students are eventually out in the workforce
