I am a Registered Industrial Engineer, but working in a very specialized area. The continuing education that I receive in order to stay competent in my area of work would never be approved by the Board. This means I would be required to receive continuing education for my career and then again for my license. My license is required as verification of my scientific and educational background and experience. My work is not such that it would endanger the health and safety of the public if I was not up to date on the latest Industrial Engineering theories.
I would suggest that there be some exemptions from such a rule, especially for those not involved in mainstream engineering where the health and safety of the public is not at risk. Also, there should be consideration for Engineers who are older, either near retirement or working part time. An Engineer who is either retired or out of work would find it difficult to afford continuing education just to work on a few projects during the year.
