More training for dementia care is needed. Recommend specific training requirements including dental hygiene (use of dental adhesive, how to clean dentures, if resident is unable to brush, etc.), personal hygiene (regular toileting, keeping face, hands, feet clean, and insuring nails are clean and trimmed). Direct care staff should be trained to assess the behavior of residents with dementia (often their only way of communicating their needs) and to respond appropriately. Training should also cover managing the anxiety, anger and depression due to dementia and some medications.
