HB909/SB488 (2024)

Despite recent wage increases for personal care attendants, their compensation remains substantially lower compared to other professions, rendering it extremely challenging to attract and retain qualified caregivers. As a result, many families are compelled to sacrifice their employment or even leave the workforce entirely to provide care for their disabled loved ones.

It is imperative to institutionalize the provision that allows for LRIs to serve as permanent paid caregivers. Families should not be forced to choose between ensuring their loved ones receive appropriate care and facing severe financial hardship. Codifying this support will alleviate the untenable situation where caregivers are pushed to the brink of financial ruin simply to meet their family’s care needs.
