My reaction would be to cease to renew. I pursued licensure as a matter of personal pride. I have never been in a position where my license was needed; in fact I have never really "used" it. But as a Naval Officer engineering specialist I thought my professional credibility demanded that I pursue the license and that I encourage my juniors to do so -- which I could not credibly do unless I had done so. I now teach in a graduate engineering department. I could not possibly maintain my teaching or research activities unless I were growing in education from year to year; I could not possibly function as a teacher or mentor to mature, capable graduate students without that growth. I have seldom encountered a continuing education experience I thought worthwhile. Thus, given the fact that I don't need the license but maintain it out of a sense of duty to the engineering profession and given that I think most continuing education is a waste of time and money, my response would be to allow my license to lapse.
