Petition Title | Elimination of physician signature for practice agreement and protocol |
Date Filed | 1/22/2008 |
Petitioner | Aida and Donald Johnson |
Petitioner's Request | To amend regulations to modify the definition of a "licensed physician;" to remove all requirements for nurse practitioners to develop and sign practice agreements with physicians; to require a nurse practitioner to work for at least two years as a RN in a hospital or medical facility. |
Agency's Plan | After publication of the petition and comment until March 10, 2008, the request will be considered by the Committee of the Joint Boards of Nursing and Medicine for a recommendation on action by the two boards. |
Comment Period | Began 2/18/2008 Ended 3/10/2008 0 comments |
Agency Decision | Take no action |
Response Date | 7/1/2008 |
Agency Decision Summary | At a meeting of the Board of Nursing on May 20, 2008 and at a meeting of the Board of Medicine on June 26, 2008, the petition request was denied because changes to the supervisory requirements for nurse practitioners with prescriptive authority would necessitate a statutory action by the General Assembly. Practice by a nurse practitioner on a military base is not governed by Virginia law or regulation, so it is not correct to state that a licensed nurse practitioner could not care for soldiers or their families on a military base because of state regulation. |
