I'm disappointed that this administration has decided to implement an ineffective solution to a nonexistent problem. I'm troubled by the weak citations given as authorizing this action. But I'm utterly ashamed that my leaders are deliberately excluding the public. The reason for ramming this regulation through the "emergency" process is that you know what we're going to say, and you don't want to hear it. Shame on you, and shame on us if we stand idly by.
I understand and have obeyed the policy of VDOT regarding the carrying of firearms on state property and during state duty since the first day I have been employed at VDOT. Although I do not agree with it, i have strictly obeyed it and will continue to. This executive order is going to get people killed. Why are we hanging up huge signs ADVERTISING that EVERYONE inside is unarmed and helpless? What is the point? Does anyone think that hanging a sign is going to dissuade anyone from committing a violent act? No, it will only embolden the ones seeking to do harm. This has created a dangerous and unsafe work environment advertising our defenselessness. This in NO WAY increases safety or security, in fact it does the opposite. Its akin to hanging a sign on the outer door of a bar stating "FREE BEER, BUT ONLY IF YOU BRING IN YOUR OWN GLASS". I was never nervous or felt unsafe going to work for VDOT, but from now on i will be nervous every time i enter an office with this sign advertising we are ready to be shot. I intend to file an official protest through channels regarding these signs and this policy for that matter.
EO 50 is an overreaching, unnecessary abuse of power. While I have alternatives to private businesses that choose to be soft targets, I have no alternatives when doing business with the state. It's easy to prohibit this from others while the governor enjoys armed protection. Who will protect me? Also, I notice that law enforcement officers are exempt. Who has a better chance of being convicted of a violent crime, a police officer or a CHP holder?
Do your own homework, you'll be surprised.
It's safe to say that more governors have been convicted of crimes this year than I have.
The Governors political grand standing is creating new "gun free zones" or rather "law-abiding citizen disarmament" zones. As we've seen these "no guns" zones only make it safer for spree killers and robbers.
How much is this political theater costing the taxpapers? Figure in the printing costs, the shipping costs, the time spent writing memos & postring signs. I estimate it will cost at least $50-100K.
Hopefully the GA assembly will address this stupidity with legislation.
This proposed regulation is ill conceived and plays into the hands of terrorists and active shooters, alike. We have had no shootings in state agencies and this prohibition on those with a concealed handgun permit, some of whom have active and ongoing threats to their lives, is entirely without any justification and needlessly and recklessly endangers innocent lives.
Importantly the Governor has no authority for this regulation. If the General Assembly wanted the Governor to have such power, they would have granted it to him explicitly, as is required constitutionally.
There wasn’t a problem and now we are fixing it? This regulation should not be approved and the emergency regulation withdrawn.
Emerging research has discovered that gun crime is on the decline except in one place. That one place where gun violence is on the rise, is GUN FREE ZONES. Research by Perdue University has proven that armed citizens are the BEST CHANCE to stop an active shooter. The propsed regulation's consequence will be to put employees and citizens into a dangerous and high risk environment, all to serve a failed political purpose.
It is utterly foolish to think Americans are safer disarmed. It is also hypocritical for a Governor, with plenty of armed protection, to disallow citiizens the same right to sellf-preservation. Turning areas where there has been NO past problems with massacres into victim disarment zones where such mayhem is now invited by disarming potential victims is also irresponsible. This proposal should be withdrawn.
way to advertise to the bad guys. Come on in. We are all unarmed. Lol. I just don't get it.
A right not exercised is a right lost.

This proposed regulation will have the opposite of the intended affect by playing into the hands of terrorists, violent criminals, and the criminally insane. We have had no shootings in state agencies and this prohibition on those with a concealed handgun permit, some of whom have active and ongoing threats to their lives, is entirely without any justification and needlessly and recklessly endangers innocent lives.
Disarming good citizens (who are the only ones likely to obey the prohibition) does not make them safer.

This proposed regulation is a solution for which there is no problem. It endangers state employees, law abiding citizens, and the innocent by making state buildings a safe zone for terrorists, criminals, and the criminally insane to conduct their evil and savage actions.

You are protected what about other people without a personal protection detail? You do not have the right to decide for me and my family.

I am a victim of gun violence.
It hurts me to my soul that I have seen the violence that ensues with gun violence.
I was in Southcenter Mall, just south of Seattle Washington, when the shots rang out.
I was selling cosmetics at a kiosk during a brisk November day in 2008 just before our beloved Black Friday. I was showing a single mother and her older son some products when I started hearing shrieking of people and a mass of movement coming right at me. Then I heard the gun fire, bullets whizzing into dry wall, bones, flesh and lives.
As the wall of terrified shoppers came at me during that frightful day, still etched into my mind as if I was on a battlefield in Iraq or Afghanistan, I attempted to quell the mass from trampling people. I then walked quickly to another store and hid with my cell phone calling my parents and girlfriend to let them know that it may be my last time calling. I could hear the police coming in the distance.
Two bodies lay in the middle of the mall, a 16 year old boy dead and 15 year old boy wounded. I later found a woman who was trampled in front of my kiosk I was standing at mere minutes earlier during that peaceful day.
When those shots rang out, do you want to know what my first thoughts were?
I do not have a gun to protect myself with. I am unarmed, a sitting duck, praying for the police to show up quicker rather than later and that gun-free zones do not work.
I never wanted to feel like that again in my life.
Since the age of 21, I have carried a pistol on my person. Period. How could this shooting happen in a gun-free zone?
I simply do not understand the way the governor thinks that creating “gun-free” zones in certain Virginia buildings will stop a single shooter, who is determined on killing, from spelling out his evil upon our great republic. Does the governor not read the intelligence reports from the FBI, CIA, DEA or his own state police?
I am a citizen of this great state and certainly understand the deadly game he is playing with these policies. After San Bernardino, Paris, Sandy Hook and multitude of other failed gun-free zones, are you willing, as Governor, to play with the lives of our great republic with ill-sighted policies?
Are you willing to stand up with pride and say after an attack where 14 people massacred, with IED’s and pipebombs built and ready to use, and the attackers having been terrorists, to say that “Yes, I am proud that INSERT BUILDING HERE was gun free and I will tell those families that I will make more buildings just as gun/bomb free as they were in San Bernardino”?
Or
Are you going to take the side of the Republic and the constitution and allow more citizens to carry a weapon where at least, they would have a fighting chance rather than cowering in a t-shirt store in the mall holding a cell phone telling my family that I love them and I may not see them again.
Your choice Governor.
Disarming law-abiding citizens and visitors does not make Virginia attractive to visitors. Before South Carolina allowed concealed weapons permit holders to carry in interstate rest areas, it had to shut several down due to crime. Since allowing CWP carry, crime has not been an issue.
If Virginia will not allow CWP holders the same freedom as the Carolinas do, there is little incentive for me to spend my time or money in Virginia.

Every mass shooting has occured in a Gun Free Zone, and even police are forbidden from being armed. How does this make any sense?

Gun free zones are targets for those who wish to do harm to others. Let employees & citizens protect themselves. Only honest people will respect the law and it is those who are put at risk.

Shall not be infringed, according to our Amrican law. Any local, state or federal givenrmnt that tries to take our right to defend ourelves, our family, loved ones or property from attack is teling us they care nothing for us, and that they want only to subdue us. We will never surrender our God given rights.
Making Virginia Tech a 'gun free zone' did nothing to stop hat happened back in 2007. Why would making the DMV and other state offices one suffer any different fate?
A person bent on causing harm will not stop because a law or sign is in their way, at least give those inside a chance to protect themselves.

Disarming good citizens (who are the only ones likely to obey the prohibition) does not make them safer. Virtually all of the "mass" shootings that have occured in the past 40 years have been in "gun free" zones. The law abiding are diesarmed and the crimainals, true to their nature violate the law and kill with impunity.

"Gunfree" state agencies mean we can now expect mass shootings at these places. NO!
Tell your body guards to get rid of their guns first. See what it feels like to be looking over your shoulder every second with no one guarding you with a firearm. That is exactly what you will be doing to us. Honest, law abiding citizens with the Constitutional right to keep and bear arms. Innocent victims blood will be on your hands Governor.

* Bans in rest stops send a very uninviting message to, and endanger the lives of, interstate travelers
* The cost of providing additional security to protect everyone who has been disarmed by this regulation will be prohibitive
* The ban won’t hold up in court, due to lack of authority by the Governor
* If parking lots are included in the ban, then citizens will be disarmed to and from their residences and everywhere in between.
And finally, when seconds count, cops are only minutes away.

The governor's ban on guns in state buildings is a bad idea. Citizens should be permitted to protect themselves, particularly in these dangerous times. For those of us who have taken the time to get training and are licensed to carry concealed weapons it is advantageous to all citizens that we be allowed to protect ourselves and people we love. Terrorists and others usually attack in gun free zones. This policy should be changed.

No amount of "banning" firearms in public buildings will make anyone safer. In fact, evidence suggests that these "gun free zones" actually attract violent crime, putting government employees and the public at greater risk. There is no evidence to suggest that lawfully carried firearms in Virginia's public buildings pose any danger at all, and a considerable body of evidence that this will increase the risk of harm.

The Governor has no legal authority for this regulation. If the General Assembly wanted the Governor to have such power, they would have granted it to him explicitly, as is required constitutionally, and they have chosen not to do so. Disarming individuals whom the Legislature has found qualified and responsible deprives law-abiding citizens of their natural and constitutional right to defend themselves and their loved ones. This regulatory action creates more soft targets in which the deranged can wreak havoc. The motivation for such irresponsible regulation is simply to make anti-2nd Amendment extremists feel like they are doing something to advance their misguided objectives. In reality such actions punish and place at risk the lives of lawful citizens.
This will not make anyone safer and could make everyone less safe!
These appear to be the most dangerous place for law abiding citizens. This is truely a bad idea. Have all the Mass Shootings which predominately take places where lawful citizens are disarmed not taught us anything?

This is both unconstitutional and simply WRONG. This governor has, once again, subverted the will of the people of Virginia by forcing this ban. His premise is patently false to everyone except the mentally deficient: removal of an armed citizenry does NOT in any sense create a "gun free zone." By definition, when a murderer carries a gun into such an area it is is no longer "gun free," is it! In pursuit of his ideological goals this governor has, once again, endangered the citizens of Virginia. This must stop immediately.
Criminals, by nature, do not follow laws; law-abiding citizens, by nature, do. This regulation will do only one thing, disarm law-abiding citizens that could otherwise be in a position to protect themselves and others from violent criminals. This regulation will not disarm a single person intent on doing harm. Any law that creates a Gun-Free Zone is a bad one. Gun-Free Zones are prime targets for those intent on doing harm.

This regulation is good only for criminals and terrorists. It removes all the good guys with guns (and there are a lot of us.) There have been no shootings in state agencies, probably in part because they are not gun free. Taking guns away from the good guys makes state agencies more dangerous for everyone.
This ban by executive order bypasses the legislature, and that's just wrong. He should not have the power to subvert the Second Amendment.
