Two members of my family receive Medicaid support services, my brother in a group home and my daughter in our private home. It is extremely difficult to fill DSP positions in both cases. The pay is inadequate and not commensurate with the skills and training necessary to perform the job well, and the level of responsibility it entails. My daughter qualifies for 56 hours of care, but we have only found one full-time provider at this point, so the other 16 hours are mine, in addition to all the other hours that are not covered and that fall to me. It is fortunate in some ways that I am retired and can provide most of my daughter's care, but I fear for the future when I can't. I want her to have services in her own home.
