I have a Florida PE and must do Continuing Education. I pay about $160 to do "two courses". One is always the mandatory rules. So I pay $80 to reread the same procedure every two years. The other course is optional, and the quality of instruction poor (usually). All engineers must be proficient before signing/stamping, so I dont believe value is added here by requiring this. Certainly if the State does require it, I hope they accept the same courses as required by other states so that we dont have to keep paying the academic "elite" to qualify us. This has become a big business for some companies and they are looking to expand thier markets. I hope the Commonwealth is wise enough to reject this. The Virginia standards are much higher than other states and it has shown in the quality of engineering and construction. IF IT AINT BROKE...DONT FIX IT.
