I have been working in the onsite septic business for almost 9 years. In that time I been tested and certified by VDH. I have designed numerous alternative and conventional systems. Through varied interpretations of the regulations, I have been put through the ringer in many counties in several different districts across Virginia.
If I go to sleep this June and wake up in July I will not suddenly lose all of the experience and training I have accumulated since I first started on my path as an AOSE. I whole heartedly agree with previous postings that all current certified AOSEs should be grandfathered into the new license program. I think it is insulting to suggest that we were not tested well enough the first time.
I do not agree with previous postings that suggest all OSEs should be CPSSs. Like nature teaches us, there is strength in diversity. When we have a diverse group of people drawing upon their unique experiences and varied educational backgrounds we build a strong association. If we all had the same exact education, went to the same school, and took the same classes we would have a very narrow view. I have always believed that one of the greatest strengths of the AOSE program was the diverse views of the folks I have met and worked with. There is never one path to knowledge.
I am tired of looking over my shoulder every winter when the lawmakers assemble in Richmond. Several bills have been brought up to effectively undercut my ability to make a living. Now this switch from VDH to DPOR has seemed to give people another avenue to try and undercut. I have taken tests, I have had several years of experience, I have obtained required CEUs, I have had countless permits approved, and I have kept my certification in good standing. Why do I need to take another test for DPOR? Grandfather everyone VDH made a pact with. We did what the Commonwealth asked us so show us some respect.
