I understand many persons, mainly those who are not currently enrolled in CACREP accredited programs, or have not graduated from CACREP accredited programs, are opposed to the Board only accepting applications for professional counseling licensure from persons having graduated from a CACREP accredited institution. While I empathize with persons in these scenarios I support a CACREP accredited movement. Professional counseling is the youngest in a large field of mental health helping professions. Other credible mental health bodies, namely Social Workers, Psychologists, and Marriage and Family Therapists, operate under one accredidation system, hence facilitating an efficient manner for license portability and accountability. Professional counseling must move into this type of system in order to increase credibility, its educational standards, streamline license portability, and most importantly, to continue to provide excellent services to clients.
