Do Not Adopt proposed revisions to Gifted Education Regulations
Please do not adopt the proposed changes for these reasons:
Further dialogue with multiple stakeholder representatives is necessary.
Removing state final approval could jeopardize decisions about funds and services, especially in tight budget times.
Assessments for growth from mastery to expertise for gifted learners is very complex and currently there are not reliable measures developed. Until this is the case, this should not be part of the regulation.
Reverting back to an annual plan would diminish the effectiveness of the goals and create a situation where the plan is in a constant state of revision and renewal which would hinder progress.
Please change the word "and" to "or" in the requirement to serve students in all four subject areas. Many best practice resources for gifted students integrate the disciplines. Separating out the subject areas would be a step backwards.
It is important that districts continue to have the option to administer assessments that align with the programs and services they offer.
