I live in Midlothian, Virginia and I oppose Action 4905.
The Board of Health should not label groups of people harmful based on who they are.
Across our races, backgrounds, and genders, we all deserve to be treated fairly. There is a nationwide effort by some politicians and interest groups to force transgender people and LGBTQ+ people out of public life. These political attacks harm us all, whether we’re gay or straight, transgender or not, because they foster discrimination and distract us from the real problems we face.
Approving this action would not help "protect women and girls," as it states in its purpose. Instead, it will make life more difficult for everyone, put vulnerable people in danger, and distract from the real threats to Virginians. I have worked with survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, stalking, and child abuse for over 20 years and I know those to be true threats to Virginians. Maternal mortality is a documented problem in Virginia. Poverty and food insecurity are at high levels. Our children are experiencing disturbingly high levels of depression, anxiety, and other mental health concerns. Trans women and girls simply want to live their life and participate in the same experiences that other people do - their presence in locker rooms or on sports teams does not put anyone in danger.
Please spend your time focusing on these documented problems and not scare tactics from people who don't represent the best interests of the majority of Virginians.
