As the parent of a child with special needs, I am the only person in her life that truly has her best interests at heart. Taking care of her, bathing her, dressing her, feeding her, and keeping her from harm is far too generic of terms to describe what my actual responsibilities are in raising my child. I am the only one responsible and accountable for ensuring that she reach her fullest potential. With the hopes that she will be able, to the largest extent possible, contribute to our society and lead an independent life.
Teachers, administrators, educators, doctors, and therapists will come and go. And they do come and go...OFTEN! However, I will be the one constant...I have been the one constant. My daughter has rights. And as her voice can not be heard, it is upon me to allow her to be heard through me. This is a basic human right. To take this away would be a violation of the rights of the most helpless among us. This would be a disgusting practice and precedent to set. Do not do it.
