Vote NO to proposed Mandatory Continuing Education
Dear Sir:
I believe that the need for professional engineers to continually educate themselves is important but it should not be a mandatory requirement. Many if not all engineers are continuously learning on the job through field work, project responsibilities, client relationships & interactions, etc… As a project manager I find it difficult to find the time for Mandatory Continuing Education (MCE) while juggling family responsibilities, managing multiple projects, fostering client relationships, project respond, and maintain the integrity of my work. Between my work / life balance I find it impossible to find the time to review and complete courses, which do not add any extra value to my job. Many engineers such as myself are responsible for our own work, hold PE licenses in multiple states, and have accumulated decades of experience, knowledge, and practices. If we allow for MCE to be the criteria for license renewal I believe we will see many professional engineers opt out for license renewals rather than go through all the hassles, not to mention the out of pocket expenses. I hope that the Board of professional Engineers will reconsider the value that MCE’s provide.
