To date, the only ones benefiting from CE are the "instructors" who charge hundreds of $$$ per session and rarely present new information that engineers who are in private practice don't already know, or is of no need to their particular practice. I have looked for "courses" to take but usually find them to be elemental or repeated from industry publications. There is only so much information that is useful in a routine practice. In those rare odd cases, most engineers that I know, know enough to seek help if they are unfamiliar with the problem.
It would be far better to require re-taking certain portions of an exam (limited to their area of expertise). This would at least answer the question of whether CE is needed. IF a PE fails a test then remedial courses should be required.
The is no need to have a license cost $2000.00 to $3000.00 per year due to the prices of CE courses. It places a large burden on small employers like myself.
