NO!!!!!to DA II

I strongly opposed for DA II to scale teeth.  There is a DIFFERENCE between being a "licensed" personnel versus a "certified" personnel.  For example, there is a DIFFERENCE between nursing assistant or even an LPN from an RN.  I know the the differences because I have been both.  Likewise, I don't think that DA II have enough formal educational background-- such as oral anatomy and pathology , nerves, veins or arteries that run in the oral cavity.  In addition, how about head and neck anatomy or pharmacology in relationship to the current medical conditions of the patients?  Do DA II know what lay beneath that gumline?  How about properly educating the patients on oral care or maintenance according to patients' current conditions?  In order to be "licensed," the dental hygienist have to go through strenuous hygiene program in order to obtain that license.  We deserve that credit!!!!!!!

My point is if DA II wants to scale, why not go to dental hygiene school?  DA is a valuable member to the dental team, but this job belongs to the registered dental hygienist for a hygienist is specialized in oral hygiene promotion along with the dentists.

Another point I want to make is that there is NOT a shortage of dental hygienist in Northern Virginia.  There may be a nursing shortage, but definitely the dental hygienists.

Respectfully,

Jam Phouminh, RDH, RN
