I am opposed to allowing dental assistants to perform hygiene duties. I presently work in a military dental clinic as a clinical dental hygienist. I see patients who have had "cleanings" performed by dental assistants and the military's equivilant of a dental assistant. It only creates a greater problem in the future. Because the prophylaxis is not performed properly, the patient suffers by developing a periodontal condition that often can not be reversed. Only trained, degreed professionals, hygienists, should be scaling teeth above and below the gingival margin. Again, the patient's oral health is the main concern here. I realize that access to care is a major issue; however, standards of care should not be compomised.
