The more one knows, the more you know what you don't know.  When I asked my Dad (DDS,MS) if I should become a dentist, he said:"Do you want to know a lot about a little or a little about a lot?"  I decided that it was best to be in the former catagory.  Why do dentists who know nothing about periodontal treatment and diagnosis have the right to propose that dental assistants be allowed to scale patients? I would not want the dental profession to know that I was ignorant in proposing this idea-- especially if I couldn't spell.
