Having just visited my local dentist for my semi-annual cleaning and exam. it was particularly timely to read about this proposed expansion of duties for dental assistants. My local dentist cleans, polishes and examines each of his patient's teeth. I cannot imagine having anyone other than the dentist or his hygienist perform these duties. Each of these are trained professionals, and that is who I EXPECT to take care of my oral exams! Expanding the duties of the assistants would be, in my opinion, the same as going to my general physician and being told that the receptionist was going to take blood samples and read them and while she was at it, determine whether my illness needs treating.
I strongly urge that this proposed law be voted against. It is important to the patients of each dentist to know that they are receiving the highest quality of care possible and that the professional caring for them has been properly trained.
